This sounds ridiculous, but I can’t wait to see how it plays out. Deadline reports Sony Pictures has won a bidding war for Hollow, an erotic thriller take on Sleepy Hollow, with Sydney Sweeney attached to star. The film would be an adaptation of the upcoming debut novel by filmmaker Lindsey Anderson Beer, who will also direct.
The Headless Horseman and Ichabod Crane in an erotic thriller? There’s nothing erotic about going headless, from what I can tell. Quite the opposite, actually.
Anyway, Hollow would star Sweeney as Katrina Van Tassel, who, in Washington Irving’s classic short story, is a supporting character and the woman Crane hopes to romance, largely because of her wealthy family. Beer’s take puts Katrina in the middle of a “seductive supernatural love triangle, mixing gothic thrills, psychological twists, and erotic thriller elements into a fresh, high-concept take on the classic tale.”
Basically, this won’t be anything like the Tim Burton movie starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci.
Beer is probably best known for writing Netflix’s Sierra Burgess is a Loser, which was a big hit for the streamer. She has only directed one movie, 2023’s Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, which went straight to Paramount+.
Sweeney has had a mixed run of projects lately. While she received some acclaim for her performance in Christy, the film was a dud that failed to be the awards contender some expected. She has starred in a number of hits, including Anyone But You and The Housemaid, but also some flops such as Madame Web and Eden.
