1. Scary Movie (review)- $55M
The Wayans’ Bros. returned after twentyfive years for the sixth Scary Movie horror-comedy, and the results were obvious. The film opened to a franchise record $55M debut, and the biggest launch for an R-rated comedy post-COVID. The timing was perfect, with two hit horror movies, Backrooms and Obsession driving the box office, plus the continued popularity of such films as Weapons and Sinners, which get spoofed. Add in another $50M from a strong overseas market, and Paramount Pictures can boast an impressive $105M start. That said, critics and audiences alike thought the movie kinda sucked, so don’t be surprised if it drops mightily next weekend.
2. Masters of the Universe (review)- $29.3M
Amazon/MGM did not have the power with its long-awaited Masters of the Universe reboot. The Mattel toy adaptation, popular for a spell in the ’80s, opened to a weak $29.3M domestically, with another $25M overseas for just $54M globally. Ouch. Personally, I loved the film and most of my friends who have seen it, did as well. But reviews overall were only modest, with critics holding it at 66% on Rotten Tomatoes. General audiences were more in favor with 88%, so perhaps it can muster up a solid hold next week. Still, it looks as if any hopes for a franchise that could maybe lead to a She-Ra movie are dead.
3. Backrooms– $25.9M/$135M
Backrooms fell a steep 68% in its second week with $25.9M, falling from first to third. This kind of drop doesn’t bode well for the long-term prospects for sequels, which are reportedly already in the works.
4. Obsession– $25.6M/$152.1M
The over-performer of the year continues to be Obsession, which fell only 7% in its fourth week of release, earning another $25M for $152M overall for Focus Features. Worldwide, things are even better with $224M.
5. The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act– $11.5M/$19.4M
The final episodes of the popular web series The Amazing Digital Circus went gangbusters on the big screen with $11.5M. There’s a good chance most people have never even heard of this one, but it speaks to the continued strength of online content that they continue to perform so well when presented theatrically.
6. Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu– $10M/$155.8M
While The Mandalorian & Grogu has managed $293M after three weeks of release, the $155M domestic number is so low that it’s likely to get surpassed by both Backrooms and Obsession in the coming days. That’s just wild. This movie has been an unfortunate miss for Lucasfilm and Disney.
7. Michael– $7.7M/$354.2M
8. The Breadwinner– $3.4M/$13.8M
9. Pressure– $3M/$11.1M
10. The Devil Wears Prada 2– $2.8M/$214.9M
Also…In its tenth week of release, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie became the first film of 2026 to cross the $1 billion dollar mark. That franchise has now earned $2.3B over two films, becoming the ninth biggest animated movie franchise ever. Nintendo is killin’ it. [BoxOfficeMojo]
