I don’t know who asked for more Focker, but it sure as Hell wasn’t me. That said, we’re getting Focker-in-Law anyway, the fourth movie in the Meet the Parents franchise and the first since Little Fockers sixteen years ago (!!!). To be fair, that film made $310M and it was the lowest earner, so there’s a reason why Universal Pictures wants to get back in the Focker business. Still, this trailer is pretty dire.
Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Blythe Danner, and Teri Polo all reprise their roles. The biggest new addition is Ariana Grande, fresh off two Wicked movies, who plays Olivia, the fiancée of Greg and Pam’s son, Henry, who is now played by Superman actor Skyler Gisondo. Beanie Feldstein is also new to the franchise as Greg and Pam’s daughter, Samantha.
This is a low-key Booksmart reunion as Feldstein and Gisondo are joined by their co-star, Eduardo Franco. On paper, this is a fun cast, but the trailer doesn’t show anything but the same old, tired humor that was played out years ago. The lie detector bit is back, for instance. >sigh<
Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised. The film is written and directed by John Hamburg, whose best movies were Along Came Polly (also with Stiller) and I Love You, Man. His last two comedies, if you can call them that, were Me Time and Why Him?
Focker-in-Law hits theaters on November 25th.
