After winning the Best Picture Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once, the director duo known as Daniels, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, have flown under the radar. They dirercted an episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, while inking new deals with both A24 and Universal Pictures. The latter is for a mystery project that has faced its share of delays, but now we know when it does happen, it’ll be led by Ryan Gosling.
Deadline reports Gosling, fresh off the massive success of Project Hail Mary, will star in an untitled event film directed by Daniels for Universal Pictures. Plot details have been quiet since word on the project first broke in 2024, and that is unlikely to change any time soon. Universal has set a November 19th 2027 date, and with production due to begin this summer, it should hit that target.
To be fair, the Daniels have been trying to get this film off the ground for a while, but it’s taken time to come together. At one point, it was due to open this year on June 12th, but it got pulled and was replaced on the calendar by Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day. The filmmakers have set quite a high bar for themselves, and they’ve been grappling with how to follow a movie that won seven Oscars.
As for Gosling, he’s already got a busy 2027 ahead with Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter. T
