We don’t know a lot about Martin Scorsese’s next film, What Happens at Night, other than it’s going to be a “ghost story” of some kind. Well, we also know it’ll have a stacked cast, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence now being joined by Mads Mikkelsen.
An Apple Original Films feature based on the Peter Cameron novel adapted by Patrick Marber, What Happens at Night centers on a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby. They check into a mostly-empty hotel where they encounter a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman and a charismatic faith healer played by Mikkelsen.
Patricia Clarkson is also in the cast, likely as the chanteuse.
Various outlets are reporting that Scorsese is already in Prague ahead of production, suggesting this is a project on the fast track.
Mikkelsen was most recently seen in Bryan Fuller’s creature feature Dust Bunny. His addition to What Happens at Night helps cement it as a project with driven by mood and ominous tidings, the type of film Scorsese hasn’t done since Shutter Island. [Deadline]
