‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’: Yoshi Levels Up In New Super Bowl Teaser

You know me; I hate when studios drop too many trailers for a movie. But in the case of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Illumination can put out as many as they want. I won’t be able to get enough. The sequel to one of my top films of 2023 will look to match or even surpass the $1.3B haul of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and I think it might happen.

The film is based on the hit 2007 video game for the Nintendo Wii, which spawned a sequel in 2010. Chris Pratt returns as the voice of Mario, with Charlie Day as his bro Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Jack Black as Bowser who is still a prisoner of his dollhouse-sized castle. At least he’s taken up painting.

Joining the voice cast this time around are Brie Larson as Rosalina and The Smashing Machine director Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return as directors, with a script by Matthew Fogel, who wrote the previous film.

As the title suggests, Mario and Luigi won’t be thumping koopas in various kingdoms this time around. Instead, they are hopping from planet to planet, racing stars across the galaxy and meeting new cosmic friends and foes. The most important of which is the greatest character in all of the Mario games, Yoshi. Who doesn’t love Yoshi?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters on April 3rd from Universal Pictures.
