1. Avatar: Fire and Ash– $13.3M/$363.5M
The numbers might be dwindling slowly and surely, but James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash continues to dominate. For the fifth week in a row it sits at #1, earning another $13.3M for $363M domestically and $1.3B worldwide, making it the 23rd biggest release globally ever.
2. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (review)- $13M
Ouch. Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later opened to $30M last June, on its way to $151M globally. But less than a year later, the interest in this franchise’s return has fizzled out. Nia DaCosta’s sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple opened to just $13M in over 3,500 screens. For DaCosta, that’s less than the $22M debut of her Candyman reboot, and less than the $46M debut of The Marvels, the lowest-grossing Marvel Studios movie. This is continuing a disturbing trend of underwhelming box offices for DaCosta’s movies, especially since she is such a talented filmmaker. Who knows what this bodes for the final chapter of the trilogy. Perhaps the presumed return of Boyle behind the camera will help change things?
