‘The Mitchells Vs. The Machines 2’ Is Finally A Go At Netflix And Sony

This news is LONG overdue! Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have finally made it official: The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 is happening, with production to begin early next year. The film is a sequel to 2021’s Oscar-nominated The Mitchells vs. the Machines (review), which became one of Netflix’s most successful animated originals ever.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are returning as producers, continuing on from the Oscar-winning success they’ve found with Sony’s Spider-Verse movies and The Lego Movie. Also coming back is Guillermo Martinez, who moves from head of story on the first film to director, joined by co-director JP Sans. Sans is fresh off the $230M box office of The Bad Guys 2.

Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Madeleine McGraw, Ellen Wightman, Maya Rudolph, Olivia Colman, Fred Armisen, Conan O’Brien, Charlyne Yi, Beck Bennett, and director Mike Rianda led the original movie’s voice cast. It’s unclear if they will reprise those roles for the sequel.

The screenplay will be written by the Molyneux sisters, the Emmy-winning duo behind Bob’s Burgers, The Bob’s Burgers Movie, and The People We Hate at the Wedding.

Plot details remain a mystery. The first film was a hilarious, kinetic, offbeat roller coaster, centering on a dysfunctional family who must save the world from a robot uprising. What’s in store for the Mitchells next time? Another robot rebellion? Or something even crazier? Whatever it is, we can’t wait to see it.
