‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ Trailer: Jim Jarmusch’s Award-Winning Family Dramedy Stars Adam Driver, Cate Blanchett, & More

At 72 years old, Jim Jarmusch is still a filmmaker who has never given in to current trends. He does his own thing in the way that he wants to. Sometimes he’s making a road trip movie about a father finding his son, sometimes it’s a quiet assassin’s tale, occasionally it’s a zombie comedy or a movie about vampire lovers. With his first movie in six years, Father Mother Sister Brother, Jarmusch took the prestigious Golden Lion for Best Picture at the Venice Film Festival.

Jarmusch’s latest is designed as a triptych set across New Jersey, Dublin and Paris. The star-studded ensemble includes a mix of Jarmusch regulars and some he’s never worked with before. Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat comprise the cast.

SYNOPSIS: Told in the form of a triptych divided into chapters set in New Jersey, Dublin and Paris, each story concerns the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Blending remarkable performances from its ensemble cast with Jarmusch’s wry and idiosyncratic observations of everyday life, the iconic indie director’s latest serves as a timely reminder that you can choose your friends and your lovers, but you can’t choose your family.

Based on the footage, Father Mother Sister Brother almost looks like a companion piece to Broken Flowers, one of his most grounded human dramedies.

MUBI will release Father Mother Sister Brother in theaters December 24th.
