- Tron: Ares (review)- $33.5M
Is there anyone who thought that a third bite at the Tron apple would somehow be juicier than the last? Only Disney, it seems, who waited fifteen years to drop Tron: Ares into theaters, and the result was a poor $33.5M. This franchise has never worked out and it might be time to let it go. The original 1982 movie flopped, at the heart of the video game crazy, mind you, with just $27M. Tron: Legacy in 2010 underwhelmed with $399M globally. And now Tron: Ares is proving to be another high-profile dud for Jared Leto. Worldwide, the film has $60.5M, which might not be so bad if it didn’t have a $180M budget. Critics were harsh on it, too, with just 57% on the Tomatometer. The audience score was much better at 87%.
2. Roofman (review)- $8M
The Channing Tatum/Kirsten Dunst crime romcom Roofman opened with $8M. While that might sound low, it’s right in line with expectations for the Derek Cianfrance-directed film, based on the true story of an ex-military vet who turns to criminality and holes up in a Toys R Us. The debut is pretty close to Tatum’s underrated space launch dramedy Fly Me to the Moon (full disclosure, I’m still pissed at ya’ll for not supporting it), but it’s also a high for Cianfrance’s career. Critics and audiences were pretty much in line for this one, scoring it in the 80s on Rotten Tomatoes.
3. One Battle After Another– $6.6M/$54.5M
4. Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie– $3.3M/$26.4M
5. Soul On Fire– $3M
6. The Conjuring: Last Rites– $2.9M/$172.4M
7. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle– $2.2M/$128.6M
8. The Smashing Machine– $1.7M/$9.8M
9. The Strangers: Chapter 2– $1.5M/$13.4M
10. Good Boy– $1.3M/$4.8M
Also…Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions released Bill Condon’s updated Kiss of the Spider Woman (review) into 1330 theaters for just $918K. It’s a meager start for the splashy musical led by a showstopping Jennifer Lopez, plus Diego Luna and a breakout performance by Tonatiuh.
Amazon/MGM released Luca Guadagnino’s psychological thriller After the Hunt in select theaters, where it had the highest PSA of the week with $25K at 6 sites for $154K total. Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edibiri lead the #MeToo thriller’s cast.
Finally, A24 gave a platform rollout to the Sundance thriller If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (review), featuring a buzzy lead performance by Rose Byrne. The film earned $89K with a high PSA of $22K, which bodes well for the film’s expansion in two weeks.
