Following the $150M success of Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, the trailer for anticipated sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, arrives tomorrow! But today, we have the release of three brand new images from the Nia DaCosta-directed film that expands our understanding of the rage virus-ravaged world.
The images feature a return of Ralph Fiennes’ eccentric loner Dr. Ian Kelson. We also see the return of Chi Lewis-Parry as Samson, the infected Alpha who terrorized Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Spike (Alfie Williams) in the prior movie. And we also see Jack O’Connell as villain Jimmy Crystal, a cult leader who survived the original outbreak and was last seen saving Spike from a pack of infected. In that image we can also see co-stars Erin Kellyman and Emma Laird.
Cillian Murphy is expected to finally return as Jim, the character he played in 2002’s 28 Days Later. Hopefully, they won’t release a single image of that, as I want it to be a complete surprise how he shows up.
The sequel was shot nearly back-to-back with Boyle’s movie. Alex Garland wrote the screenplay, as he did the entire trilogy. DaCosta spoke with Rolling Stone about how the connection between the two movies and how she made this one her own…
“The thing that connects the two is that they’re both bonkers, idiosyncratic, and very artistically personal works,” DaCosta tells Rolling Stone. “My big pitch when I was talking to the producers, including Danny and Alex, before I came on was, ‘I’m going to make this my own. I’m not going to try to make a Danny Boyle movie.’ Because that’s impossible to make. He’s so special. And it didn’t really interest me. It’s so hard to describe the tone of the movie that I actually won’t even attempt to. But it keeps the same unique, off-the-wall, surprising energy.”
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple hits theaters January 16th 2026.
