When your submarine action thriller is cleverly titled SUBversion, it better be really great or really silly. Fortunately, the Amazon MGM film has two actors who are pretty good at being both: Chris Hemsworth and Lily James.
THR reports Lily James will join Chris Hemsworth in Subversion, a film directed by Patrick Vollrath and written by Andrew Ferguson. This will be the German filmmaker’s sophomore effort after directing Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the plane hijacking thriller, 7500, and it turns out Subversion follows a similar path. That film was also with Amazon, so they must’ve been happy with the results.
Hemsworth plays a washed-up naval commander blackmailed by a cartel into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal cargo into international waters. James plays the Coast Guard officer in hot pursuit. The film has been described as “Die Hard on a submarine.”
Shooting on Subversion begins this fall in Australia.
Add this to a growing list of action flicks for James, as she’s starring in Jaume Collet-Serra’s Cliffhanger remake as well as Takashi Miike’s Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo. Hemsworth was last seen in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and he voiced Orion Pax in Transformers One. He’ll be seen next in Bart Layton’s Crime 101, and he’ll return as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday.
