If you were a kid growing up in the ’80s, chances are you were obsessed with KITT, the fancy talking car David Hasselhoff drove in Knight Rider. I know I had ALL of the Knight Rider toys back then. While the popular show lasted a few seasons and led to multiple spinoffs, a big-screen feature has never gotten off the ground. But that appears to be changing thanks to the guys behind Cobra Kai.
THR reports Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are in early talks to develop a Knight Rider movie for Universal Pictures. Kelly McCormick and David Leitch of 87North are producers along with Spyglass Entertainment, so you can bet the action will be ramped up to another level. Hurwitz and Schlossberg, who previously directed two of the Harold & Kumar films, are being eyed to direct.
The most recent attempt to do a movie based on the show was going to be led by James Wan, but that never happened.
Knight Rider starred Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a detective working for FLAG (Foundation of Law and Government) who solved crimes behind the wheel of his futuristic and nearly indestructible Trans Am, KITT, which stood for Knight Industries Two Thousand.
This is still early days, so it’s too soon to know who will be playing the one in the driver seat and who will be voicing KITT.
