Tim Burton’s remake of Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman just got a major injection of star power. A few weeks ago, Jeff Sneider dropped a rumor that Margot Robbie was coming aboard to produce and star in the Warner Bros. film, a remake of Nathan Hertz’s 1958 sci-fi classic. Now Sneider’s reporting is being backed up by Variety and other outlets.
Robbie is eyeing the starring role in Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman, and to produce through her LuckyChap banner. The film began with a first draft screenplay by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, but she has left the project and the search for a new writer is ongoing. Whether Robbie decides to star will depend on whether she likes the final script.
The original plot involved a wealthy and emotionally unstable heiress, Nancy Archer, who grows to fifty feet tall after an encounter with an alien spacecraft. A key plot point involved Nancy’s drinking, and her unhappy marriage to a philandering husband. Nobody believes her when she tells them what happened, so Nancy sets out to use her newly acquired size to get some revenge.
This is right in the Burton wheelhouse, especially considering his love of old sci-fi involving alien encounters, as we saw with Mars Attacks.
Burton is busier than he’s been in a long time. He’s coming off the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, with a third film on the way. There’s also the second season of Wednesday hitting Netflix this week.
Coming up for Robbie is Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey alongside Colin Farrell, and Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights in 2026.
