Coming to theaters next month is the sci-fi romance Another End, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Renate Reinsve, and Berenice Bejo. Of the three, Reinsve seems to be everywhere right now, riding a wave of accolades for her performances in The Worst Person In the World, A Different Man, Handling the Undead, Armand, and Sentimental Value. The film had its world premiere last year at Berlin, and so far the reviews have not been kind. But it’s hard to look past the cast and an intriguing premise centered on the ability to transfer one person’s consciousness into another.
Another End is directed and co-written by Piero Messina, a disciple of The Great Beauty director Paolo Sorrentino. He previously directed Juliette Binoche in The Wait.
The story has Bernal as a grieving man who agrees to have the mind of his lost love implanted into the body of another woman to say goodbye, only for there to be ramifications from the reunion.
Also in the cast are Olivia Williams, Philip Rosch, Pal Aron, and Tim Daish.
SYNOPSIS: Since Sal (Gael García Bernal) lost Zoe (Renate Reinsve), the love of his life, he’s been living only in memories. Sal’s sister Ebe (Bérénice Bejo), who observes her brother with growing concern, suggests he turn to Another End, a new technology that promises to ease grief by briefly bringing back to life the consciousness of those who have died. Sal finds Zoe again in this way, but in the body of another woman. What was broken suddenly seems to come together again, but this joy is fragile, fleeting, treacherous. Can love truly survive as a secret guarded by the body?
Vertical Releasing will open Another End on September 19th.
