Remember the 1994 comedy Threesome? Back then, the idea of three college friends living in a throuple situation was considered taboo, and it attracted a lot of curious viewers to the film. It remains something of a cult classic. Times have changed, though, and it’ll be interesting how audiences react to Chad Hartigan’s film, The Threesome, which treads similar ground.
Zoey Deutch, Jonah Hauer-King, and Ruby Cruz star in The Threesome, which explores the messy repercussions of a surreal night that leads to an unexpected sexual encounter.
Also in the cast are Jaboukie Young-White, Josh Segarra, Arden Myrin, Robert Longstreet, Kristin Slaysman, Allan McLeod, and Julia Sweeney.
The film premiered earlier this year at SXSW, and personally, I’ve heard good things about its surprising depth and honesty. Hartigan is the filmmaker behind the criminally underseen films Morris from America and Little Fish, so he’s long since earned my trust.
SYNOPSIS: One fateful night, the stars appear to align for the unassuming Connor (Jonah Hauer-King) as his long-time crush, the irreverent Olivia (Zoey Deutch), steers them into a threesome with an alluring stranger named Jenny (Ruby Cruz). The unexpected encounter leads to romance and pregnancy, thrusting all three into a difficult and messy journey towards true accountability and adulthood.
Vertical will release The Threesome in theaters on September 5th.
