One of the prevailing mysteries surrounding The Fantastic Four: First Steps is whether the classic villain Mole Man will appear. There have been plenty of rumors…and they can all come to an end. The cast of the Marvel film were on hand at CCXP Mexico where they revealed that yes, the Mole Man will be showing up.
Joseph Quinn, who plays Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch, told the crowd…
“Certainly, a very stacked cast we have a lot of fantastic characters in there. There is also Mole Man, who’s wonderful in it, but Galactus is the big bad.”
What Quinn didn’t reveal is who is playing the character, although speculation has been it’s Paul Walter Hauser’s unidentified role. Makes sense. Kind of a fun character for an actor who likes to get a little weird, if you’ve seen his pro wrestling stuff you know what I mean.
Mole Man isn’t just a classic Fantastic Four villain, he was in the first issue of their comic book in 1961 and the first baddie they ever faced. Not a superpowered foe or an extraterrestrial, Mole Man was originally a nuclear engineer and explorer named Harvey Rupert Elder, whose crackpot theories about Hollow Earth (and his dwarfish appearance) got him ostracized by society. When he gets blinded and trapped deep underground with no hope of returning to the surface, he dubs himself the Mole Man and takes over as ruler of the Subterranean group known as the Moloids.
A version of Mole Man was played by Tim Blake Nelson in the dreadful 2015 Fantastic Four movie that you’re mad I reminded you of. Can you believe it’s been a decade?
The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters on July 25th, directed by Matt Shakman and starring Quinn, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. [CultureCrave]
