‘Peacemaker’: James Gunn Teases ‘Superman’ Ties And Major Cameo, Michael Rooker’s Villainous Role Revealed

James Gunn has a lot on his plate just getting the DCU and DC Studios off the ground. And part of that heavy workload is the second season of Peacemaker, with John Cena returning as antihero Christopher Smith this August. Gunn also has Superman, which is going to be the real measuring stick for the DCU when it arrives in July.

Gunn spoke with EW about Peacemaker‘s upcoming season, and teased the connections it will have with Superman and the wider DCU…

“I developed it along the way, in conjunction with the other DC projects that we’re doing, so it’s very much connected to ‘Superman’ and it’s very much connected to what comes after.”

In a recent Peacemaker trailer, we see some of what does come next and it’s Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabel Merced, and Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, making fun of Peacemaker as he tries pitifully to join their ranks. But Gunn says there’s even more, including a much bigger DCU cameo that nobody will see coming…

“We see a lot of different characters from Superman in the [season], [including] Isabela and Nathan and Sean, and then we see a bunch of other characters later on in the season from other parts of the DCU and from Superman. There might even be one really, really, really big cameo near the end of the show,” Gunn said.

Maybe Jason Momoa as Lobo, before we see him later in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow? Nah, that doesn’t make sense. We already know that Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. is in both Peacemaker and Superman, so it’s not that. Perhaps the reveal of a major actor playing one of the other major DC heroes, such as Batman or Wonder Woman?

Another surprise that’s already been revealed is the role played by Gunn favorite, Michael Rooker. it was confirmed that he’ll play eagle hunter Red St. Wild, and he’ll be stalking Peacemaker’s sidekick, Eagly.

“His name is Red St. Wild, and he’s the world’s foremost eagle hunter who is on a mission to kill Eagly,” shared Gunn. “We thought Eagly was probably the most popular character from season 1, and so in season 2, he has his own story with his nemesis, played by none other than the despicable Michael Rooker.”

Peacemaker‘s second season hits HBO Max on August 21st.
