Two of the biggest successes for Warner Bros. over the last year have been Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and A Minecraft Movie. The latter just passed $550M at the global box office, while Tim Burton’s sequel hit $450M last year. So it’s no shock to learn the studio is pursuing sequels for both, and right away.
Current studio chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy (it could change at any moment) told Deadline they are in early talks for Tim Burton to do a third Beetlejuice movie, and for Jared Hess to return on a second Minecraft film.
“Imminently. The ink might not be dry on the deals yet, but imminently,” De Luca said when asked about when to expect sequels to both.
Other minor updates for the studio includre a remake of the Whitney Houston/Kevon Costner classic The Bodyguard, which now has Sam Wrench (Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour) attached to direct and Juror No. 2 writer Jonathan A. Abrams on the screenplay. Does this mean the Swifties should start getting ready for their leader’s next major acting role?
Warner Bros. would also like to have Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) return to the studio after his Resident Evil reboot for Sony Pictures.
The Batman director Matt Reeves is aboard Them!, the giant ant film from composer/director Michael Giacchino (Werewolf by Night) that is a new take on Gordon Douglas’ 1954 creature feature.
