It’s been six years since Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day 2U, and since then, fans have been wondering why a sequel to the financially successful horror-comedy franchise hasn’t happened. Landon has offered numerous updates, some positive some not so much, but over the weekend Landon and star Jessica Rothe made it official. Happy Death Day 3 is finally happening!
Rothe and Landon revealed the news in front of crowds at the American Cinematheque where they were showing a double feature of the first two movies…
“The third movie is moving forward,” Rothe said.
“It is moving forward”, Landon added.
Released in 2017, Happy Death Day stars Rothe as Tree Gelbman, a college student who is murdered on her birthday, and keeps reliving that day in a time loop as she tries to find her killer. The film made $125M on a $4M budget, while the sequel, which expanded to include sci-fi elements, earned $64M.
Blumhouse has yet to make any announcement on Happy Death Day 3 so it’s probably in the earliest stages. This is very good news, though, that we’re finally going to see Landon’s trilogy come to an end.
Meanwhile, Landon’s next film, Drop, opens this week on April 11th.
