David O. Russell’s Madden film just advanced closer to the goal line. The controversial filmmaker continues to be able to gather star-studded ensembles despite a troubling history and the box office disaster that was Amsterdam. Joining the already-cast Christian Bale and Nicolas Cage are Kathryn Hahn, John Mulaney, and Sienna Miller.
Madden stars Cage as Hall of Fame Oakland Raiders head coach and legendary broadcaster John Madden, with Bale as Raiders owner Al Davis. Russell will write and direct the film, which won’t be a traditional biopic by any means. Instead, the story charts the unusual path Madden took from winning Super Bowls to becoming the face of the most popular and influential sports video game franchise ever.
Per Deadline, “Mulaney will play Trip Hawkins, who founded EA Sports and was a driving force in behind the Madden NFL video games; Hahn will play Madden’s wife, Virginia; and Miller will play Davis’ wife, Carol.”
The project has been in the works for quite a while. Cage is the third actor attached to play John Madden, preceded by Will Ferrell and Hugh Jackman who both dropped out.
Madden, which is currently set up with Amazon MGM Studios, is expected to begin filming next month.
