The Chronology of Water, Kristen Stewart’s long-awaited directorial debut, is officially headed to Cannes. It’ll be part of the Un Certain Regard program at the festival, where it’s sure to make a big splash. With the announcement, we now have our first official look at the film.
Stewart apparently agreed to trim the film’s runtime based on requests from the festival. It remains to be seen whether the theatrical version is the same.
Based on Lidia Yuknavitch’s cult favorite memoir, The Chronology of Water stars Imogen Poots as the author, who finds her voice through the written word and her salvation as a swimmer – ultimately becoming a triumphant teacher, mother and a singular modern writer.
Joining Poots in the cast are Thora Birch, Earl Cave, Kim Gordon, Jim Belushi, Michael Epp, and Susannah Flood.
Given the long development process, it’s no surprise Stewart takes on multiple roles, none in front of the camera. She co-wrote the screenplay with Andy Wingo, and is a producer alongside her spouse, Dylan Meyer.
The Chronology of Water has yet to gain an official release date, but it will have distribution through Ridley Scott’s indie banner Scott Free.
Cannes will be busy with actors making their feature directing debuts in the Un Certain Regard category. Scarlett Johansson’s Eleanor the Great will be on hand, joined by writer/director Harris Dickinson’s drama, Urchin.
