Darren Aronofsky’s New York City crime flick Caught Stealing arrives this summer, but today Vanity Fair has our first official look at the film starring Austin Butler. What you’ll probably notice after taking them all in is…well, the hairstyles are like characters unto themselves. You can practically feel the ’90s seeping back into your bones.
Caught Stealing is an adaptation of the Charlie Huston book, with Huston penning the screenplay himself. Butler plays Henry “call me Hank” Thompson, a former baseball player plunged into NYC’s criminal underworld in a wild fight for survival from dangerous folks who want something from him. Pretty good time to have his trust aluminum bat handy.
The film was apparently inspired by Martin Scorsese’s dark comedy After Hours, which might explain the casting of co-star Griffin Dunne who led that 1985 cult classic.
Liev Schreiber and Vincent D’Onofrio are seen in one image sporting some epic facial hair, Matt Smith rockin’ a mohawk, and Bad Bunny with a mean goatee and afro. There’s also a feral cat with Butler that looks like it could use a spa day. The hair rules.
Also in the cast are Zoe Kravitz, seen getting steamy with Butler, plus Regina King, Will Brill, Griffin Dunne, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Action Bronson, Carol Kane, and George Abud.
Caught Stealing hits theaters on August 27th. I expect Sony Pictures will drop a trailer soon, possibly tomorrow.
