While I will forever lament that Gareth Evans never gave us The Raid 3, perhaps his next film Havoc will help me get over it. The long-awaited action flick starring Tom Hardy has been on the sidelines for a few years, but today we have our first official look at it in a minute-long teaser from Netflix.
Written and directed by Evans in his first film since Apostle in 2018, Havoc stars Hardy as a troubled detective who must fight through the criminal underworld to save a politician’s son.
Also in the cast are Jessie Mei Li, Justin Cornwell, Quelin Sepulveda, Luis Guzmán, Michelle Waterson, Sunny Pang, Jim Caesar, Xelia Mendes-Jones, Yeo Yann Yann, Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker.
Based on the short bit of footage we have here, Evans clearly hasn’t missed a step. The violence, captured in practical effects, is brutal and unforgiving in all of the ways we loved about The Raid. Hardy looks perfect for this kind of flick, too. Certainly Evans thought so…
“When it comes to a film called ‘HAVOC,’ with me and Tom Hardy, we deliver on the action front,” Evans said. “That’s the primary focus. But with Tom, what you get as well is an intensely muscular central performance, and really well-developed character. There’s a lot going on under the hood.”
Here’s the synopsis: Walker (Tom Hardy) is a bruised detective fighting his way through the criminal underworld, threatening to engulf his entire city. In the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong, Walker finds himself with a number of factions on his tail; a vengeful crime syndicate, a crooked politician, as well as his fellow cops. When attempting to rescue the politician’s estranged son, whose involvement in the drug deal starts to unravel a deep web of corruption and conspiracy, he is forced to confront the demons of his past.
Havoc hits Netflix on April 25th.
