‘Jehanne d’Arc’: Baz Luhrmann’s Next Film Is A Joan Of Arc Biopic

It’s been a couple of years since Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis took the country by storm, introduced everyone to Austin Butler, and earned eight Oscar nominations. Now Luhrmann is ready for his next film for Warner Bros., and it promises to be another epic biopic on a misunderstood figure in history: Joan of Arc.

Deadline reports Baz Luhrmann’s next film is Jehanne d’Arc, a biopic about Joan of Arc. The iconic teen believed she had been commanded by God to join the French military and fight in the Hundred Years War, eventually commanding the forces that repelled England at the siege of Orléans. Joan was eventually captured, put on trial, and executed, becoming a French folk hero and patron saint who challenged traditional gender roles.

Details are slim as Luhrmann is just beginning the casting process to find his actress to play the titular heroine. Her story has been captured on the big screen many times, notably in Luc Besson’s 1999 film The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc starring Milla Jojovich. In 2017 and 2019, French director Bruno Dumont debuted at Cannes his biopics, Jeanette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc and its sequel Joan of Arc, starring Lise Leplat Prudhomme.
