Box Office: ‘Alien: Romulus’ Knocks ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Out Of Top Spot With $108M Global Debut

  1. Alien: Romulus (review)- $41.5M

It took a Xenomorph to finally knock Deadpool & Wolverine out of the top spot. Alien: Romulus, the first Alien movie under Disney, opened with $41.5M domestic, and $108M globally. That stateside number is the second-best ever for the franchise, behind the $51M debut of Prometheus in 2012. Reviews have been strong across the board, with a “B+” CinemaScore, an 81% Certified Fresh critics score and an 86% audience score.

2. Deadpool & Wolverine– $29M/$545.8M

After four weeks, Deadpool & Wolverine slips to #2 with $29M and $545M domestically. Worldwide, Marvel’s offbeat X-Men flick already has $1.14B which is #9 all-time for the MCU. It’ll easily surpass Captain America: Civil War‘s $1.15B in the next few days.

3. It Ends with Us– $24M/$97.7M

Sony’s got an unquestionable hit on their hands with It Ends With Us. The Blake Lively/Justin Baldoni romance adaptation is just shy of $100M domestically, and has $179NM worldwide after two weeks.

4. Twisters– $9.8M/$238.4M

A digital release hasn’t diminished the blockbuster storm that is Twisters. The summer thriller earned another $9.8M for a domestic $238M total, with $333M making up the worldwide number.

5. Coraline (re-release)- $8.3M

The 15th anniversary rerelease of Coraline was really big with fans of the Neil Gaiman adaptation, earning $8.3M in just over 1500 theaters. I actually went back and found my original review of this, one of the earliest ever written for the site. It’s a horrible review, but here it is anyway!

6. Despicable Me 4– $6M/$340.4M

7. Trap– $3.4M/$35.2M

8. Inside Out 2– $3.2M/$642.1M

9. Stree 2– $2.5M

10. Borderlands– $2.3M/$13.5M

Ouch. After a terrible opening weekend, Borderlands plummeted in week two, dropping 72% (!!!) and earning just $2.3M for $13.5M domestically. It doesn’t get better internationally, where the starry video game adaptation adds only another $5M.
