Kevin Feige Confirms ‘Blade’ Will Be R-Rated

This is a huge week for Marvel with Deadpool & Wolverine its only movie of the year. The film is expected to be gigantic, but more than that, as the first R-rated MCU movie, it could set the stage for more mature-themed superhero projects. Kevin Feige has been asked a lot of questions about the R-rating lately, and he took some time to clarify what the future of adult movies in the MCU will be.

First off, in a recent press conference for Deadpool & Wolverine, Feige shot down any thought that all future Marvel films would be R-rated. It’s a ridiculous notion, but those rumors have been out there…

“Every [Marvel] film is important, and there’s nothing better than a great movie for a Cinematic Universe,” he said. “The before and after [aspect of it all]? I think a lot of people talk about the R-rating and, ‘Is every [Marvel] movie going to be R-rated after this?’ [And the answer is] of course not. But I hope every movie after this embraces its tonality the way the way ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and the way this team does.”

In short, it’ll be on a case-by-case basis. And one case in which it would make sense is Blade. The long-delayed film with Mahershala Ali has been in the works since 2019, and doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere fast.  And while directors, filmmakers, and even actors have come and gone from the vampire movie, Feige is ready to confirm that Blade WILL have an R-rating…

“For the last few years, we’ve been trying to crack [‘Blade’],” said Feige to BlackTreeTV. “The most important thing for us is not rushing it and making sure we’re making the right ‘Blade’ movie because there were great ‘Blade’ movies years ago. They were all rated R. I think [the rating]—like “Deadpool”—is inherent with ‘Blade.’”

And there you have it. Now if only they could get the movie finished. Hopefully, Feige will have some updates on Blade and other projects this week at San Diego Comic-Con.

Blade is currently set to open on November 7th 2025, but that date is unlikely to stick.
