Because audiences can’t get enough of TikTok-dancing killer AI dolls, M3GAN was a huge hit at the start of 2023, earning $181M and an upcoming sequel, M3GAN 2.0. But the cinematic universe is only just beginning, as James Wan and Blumhouse are developing a spinoff, SOULM8TE, that takes the murderous doll idea to an erotic level.
According to Deadline, SOULM8TE centers on a man who acquires an artificially intelligent android to cope with the loss of his dead wife. In his attempt to tweak it to become truly sentient, the man inadvertently turns his harmless lovebot into something deadly.
Oh, this sounds like twisted fun!
The film will be directed by Kate Dolan, known for the Irish psychological thriller You Are Not My Mother. Dolan rewrote the original screenplay by Rafael Jordan that was based on a story idea by Wan, Jordan, and Wan’s spouse Ingrid Bisu.
Here’s what Wan said in a statement, “SOULM8TE” is a thrilling and seductive addition to the “M3GAN” universe. We’re excited to partner with Kate to bring this story to life with her unique cinematic vision and point of view.”
Dolan added, “Fundamentally, I view this film as an exploration of relationships and loneliness. Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths.”
