The Umbrella Academy is just so wonderfully weird from start to finish. I don’t even just mean the series itself, the entire existence of its IP is so improbably awesome. Starting as a graphic novel series created by none other then “My Chemical Romance’ front man Gerard Way this franchise should have fallen on its face so many times but for the golden rule, Quality is King. The writing, performances, direction…hell, even the song choices, for the Netflix series have fired on all cylinders to the point that I’m still amazed we’re talking about the final season only 4 seasons into its run. I guess that’s this series final lesson in quality, get out while you’re on top.
The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeve’s children (now adults), a group that were each “adopted” from their biological families after displaying super heroic powers by millionaire philanthropist Reginald Hargreeves. Hargreeve’s molded them into a team of child heroes until, following a team members death, the team disbanded.
I don’t have enough space on this entire blog to cover the complexity of everything that’s unraveled in the last three seasons. Let’s just say after time-travel, multiple apocalypses, super-villans, and multiple realities before disbanding again at the end of season 3 the team must join up once more to make sense of the world left standing after the climatic battle at the end of the last season.
