‘Aisha’ Interview: Letitia Wright On Her New Refugee Drama, Working With Josh O’Connor, And More

Letitia Wright is mainly known for the role of Shuri in Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but it’s her choices outside of Marvel that have led to the most personal performances of her career. Such is the case with Aisha, an immigrant drama opening in theaters on May 10th. Starring alongside the red-hot Challengers star Josh O’Connor, Wright plays Aisha, a Nigerian refugee dealing with a broken immigration system in Ireland. Aisha, who fled from violence that took much of her family, struggles to keep safe those who remain while facing bigotry, bureaucracy, and the constant threat of deportation.

The film is directed by Frank Berry, who previously explored Ireland’s prison system with Michael Inside. In my conversation with Wright, she spoke about working with Berry on Aisha, the vast amounts of research that they put into the film, and the personal experiences she brought to the role, having come to London from Guyana when she was just eight years old. Wright also spoke about working with O’Connor and the chemistry they found as two people who feel like outsiders.
