The discussion over who will replace Daniel Craig as James Bond has been going on since before he announced his departure. It’s just the way we look at the character now; we start anticipating the new Bond before the current one has left. But now that Craig is finished with the role, the conversation has picked up. And one of those who has been on fan wishlists is Taron Egerton. But the Kingsman actor, who fans also want to play Wolverine, tells Total Film that he isn’t in contention for 007. What’s more, he thinks producers have already chosen the new one.
“Yeah. I mean, I think they’ve already got someone, and it’s not me,” Egerton said. “I mean, I’ve never been a part of the conversations. I’ve never met the Broccolis. They’ve never inquired about me. I’ve just never been one of the guys that they’re looking at. I just don’t think I’m the right person for that. I think there’s much, much, much better candidates for that role than me. But, you know, I’d be a very willing audience member. They’re brilliant films.”
Of course, he could be lying. That’s a secret Bond producers would want kept close to the vest until the exact right moment. Lately, rumors have been that Aaron Taylor-Johnson is the frontrunner, having reportedly met Barbara Broccoli herself to discuss becoming 007.
Whoever becomes James Bond next has some big shoes to fill. Craig took the franchise to box office heights it had never seen before, and his final performance gave the character one epic swan song. Chances are we’ll hear some news by the end of the year, so stay tuned.
