Box Office: ‘Smile’ Stays Strong As ‘Amsterdam’ And ‘Lyle Lyle Crocodile’ Flop

  1. Smile– $17.6M/$49.8M

Smile continues to get the last laugh at the box office, falling an astonishingly small 22% from last week and earning $17M. That’s good for $49M domestic, and $89M worldwide for one of the better-reviewed horrors of the season.

2. Lyle, Lyle Crocodile– $11.5M

What? Nobody wanted to watch a movie about a singing crocodile in the city? Apparently not, as Lyle, Lyle Crocodile opened with a small-ish $11.5M.The Javier Bardem/Constance Wu/Shawn Mendes family comedy could be a victim of the season. Right now audiences are either checking out prestige films or getting into Halloween. Maybe if the croc ate somebody?

3. Amsterdam (review)- $6.5M

David O. Russell’s Amsterdam, frankly, shit the bed. Just $6.5M was brought in for the star-studded political comedy, a real low when you consider the $250M haul for American Hustle in 2013 and the $101M for Joy in 2015. But these are different times, and true bankable movie stars are hard to come by, especially for a film as ill-defined as this one was by the promos. Nobody really knew what the story was about, and so they didn’t show up. Simple as that.

4. The Woman King– $5.3M/$54.1M

5. Don’t Worry Darling– $3.4M/$38.4M

6. Avatar– $2.5M/$23.3M

7. Barbarian– $2.18M/$36.5M

8. Bros– $2.15M/$8.8M

9. Terrifier 2– $825K/$1.2M

In surprising platform news, Terrifier 2 was released into 886 theaters for a limited Thursday-Monday run, and earned $1.2M. That ain’t bad for the Bloody Disgusting release of Damien Leone’s killer clown sequel, which features AEW superstar and ROH World Champion Chris Jericho in a small role. I’m sure he’s somewhere taking credit for this success.

10. Top Gun: Maverick– $800K/$714.6M
