‘Aftersun’ Trailer: Paul Mescal Stars In Charlotte Wells’ Sensitive Father/Daughter Drama For A24

#1- This surprised me more than anybody. I knew Charlotte Wells' AFTERSUN had hit me hard when I first saw it, but my God it hasn't left my mind since. A film that navigates that treacherous ground between our memories of our loved ones and the reality, it left me rethinking everything I ever thought I knew about my own father, who left us suddenly and way too soon. I was left utterly devastated by this movie, and the performances by Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio. When this time comes around next year, AFTERSUN will still be there in the back of my mind. It now occupies a space in which I'm not sure I can handle watching it again, and yet I'm desperate to because of the emotions it forces me to confront.

This has been a huge year for Normal People and The Lost Daughter actor Paul Mescal, and his career is only going to get brighter from here. This week the actor can be seen opposite Emily Watson in God’s Creatures, and recently TIFF saw the world premiere of Carmen in which he’s opposite Melissa Barrera. But the film that has A24 calculating its Oscar odds is the Cannes selection Aftersun, a sensitive father/daughter drama from first-time filmmaker Charlotte Wells.

Mescal stars opposite Frankie Corio and dancer/choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall in the heartfelt story of a daughter’s cherished memories of her father. The film was selected as part of the Cannes’ Critics Week, presenting the early work of fresh creative voices.

Coming up for Mescal is Garth Davis’ sci-fi thriller, Foe, which is definitely something else to keep an eye on.

Aftersun will be released by A24 on October 21st.

At a fading vacation resort, 11-year-old Sophie treasures rare time together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum (Paul Mescal). As a world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. Twenty years later, Sophie’s tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t, in Charlotte Wells’ superb and searingly emotional debut film.
