Day 3 (June 8th) of Netflix Geeked Week 2022 drops its ‘Animation Showcase’ and unveils a plethora of Anime that dedicated and newfound fans can’t wait to glue their eyeballs to. Here’s what’s coming to Netflix :

Masters of the Universe – Revolution : Release Date TBD.

Masters of the Universe: Revolution is described as the next epic chapter in the battle for Eternia. It is a standalone story that takes place after the two part series events in Revelation. Revelations served as a sequel series as a spiritual sequel to the original 1980s cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The new age storyline continued on many of the unresolved threads that were left hanging after the show’s 1985 conclusion.

According to Netflix, it’s an all-new story that brings the focus to He-Man vs. Skeletor “like you’ve never seen them before”!  It’s technology versus magic as He-Man and these heroic warriors face the forces of Skeletor and a deadly threat to the Planet.

With the all-star voice cast to be announced, Kevin Smith, Rob David, Ted Biaselli, Christopher Keenan, and Frederic Soulie will serve as executive producers of this brand new but yes, follow up series. Masters of the Universe: Revolution will also be produced by Mattel Television with Powerhouse Animation as the animation studio. Stay tuned for more details to come.

Dragon Prince: Mystery of Aavaros – Season 4 : Coming later this year (2022).

Netflix’s animated series The Dragon Prince is finally back after a three wait for a whole new season. Season 4 will be called The Dragon Prince: Mystery of Aaravos and will be released sometime later this year. Not only that, but the series will also be returning for seasons 5, 6, and 7 which is going to be called The Dragon Prince Saga. The Dragon Prince is a Netflix Original animated fantasy series, created just for Netflix by Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond.

Many questions remain unanswered but long awaited fans will finally get to see what this season has in store. Fans can also catch an early sneak peak of a new episode at this years San Diego Comic-Con as well as disucssions from The Dragon Prince: Mystery of Aaravos panel. Stay tuned for more details.

Arcane – Season 2 : Release Date TBD.

Animated series Arcane launched in November 2021 and immediately became a smash hit for its gripping tale and to note, one hell of a cliffhanger ending. Set in the Riot Games’ League of Legends universe, Arcane tells the origin stories of characters from utopian city Piltover and the repressed undercity Zaun, including sisters Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell).

Steinfeld has since starred in Marvel’s series Hawkeye and Purnell has captivated audiences, including myself, with her badass role as Jackie from the hit Showtime series, Yellowjackets. Production is underway and it’s possible a trailer could be released later this year but you’ll have to stay tuned for season two’s release date. Meanwhile, season one is currently available on Netflix.

Entergalactic – Coming Fall 2022.

Entergalactic voice stars Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and Kenya Barris who join forces to present an original, animated story about a young artist named Jabari. The series follows Jabari as he attempts to balance love and success.  Finding the latter brings him a step closer to the former when moving into his dream apartment introduces him to his new neighbor, photographer it-girl, Meadow who is voiced by Jessica Williams.  It’s an explosion of art, music, and fashion. Entergalactic takes place in the only city that can handle all three, New York City.

Having been announced back in 2019, this new animated series is directed by Fletcher Moules, whose work includes Clash of Clans: Revenge and more. The project was created by Cudi along with Kenya Barris and Ian Edelman. Entergalactic features an all-star cast including: Timothée Chalamet (Dune, Call Me by Your Name) as Jimmy:, Ty Dolla $ign as Ky, Laura Harrier (Hollywood, BlacKkKlansman) as Carmen, Vanessa Hudgens (Tick, Tick…Boom!) as Karina, Christopher Abbott (Kraven the Hunter, On the Count of Three) as Reed, 070 Shake as Nadia, Jaden Smith (After Earth) as Jordan, Keith David (From Scratch, 21 Bridges) as Mr. Rager, Teyana Taylor (Coming 2 America, The Trap) as Boxing Coach, Arturo Castro (Yes Day, Broad City) as Len, and Macaulay Culkin (American Horror Story, The Righteous Gemstones) as Downtown Pat. Love, Death + Robots – Season 3 : Available now.

Love, Death + Robots is a collection of animated short stories spans that visually explore science fiction, fantasy, horror and comedy. World-class animation creators bring captivating stories to life in the form of a unique and visceral viewing experience. This brilliant and thought provoking anthology series include tales that explore alternate histories, life for robots in a post-apocalyptic city and a plot for world domination by super-intelligent yogurt. Among the show’s executive producers is Oscar-nominated director David Fincher.

Even though Love, Death + Robots – Season 3 is currently available, Netflix Geeked Week 2022 : Animation Day takes you behind the scenes of one of the third seasons’ most impressive-looking episodes, “Jibaro”. The story of the episode centers around a deadly siren who gets obsessed with a knight that doesn’t get bewitched by her cry.

“Jibaro” director and screenwriter Alberto Mielgo talks about the story and how the episode was made. He brings esquisite color and details to each of the characters, a rich environment lush with nature taken from his own personal experiences, and incredibly blends technology with his love for human connection. Mielgo had previously collaborated with the series in Season 1, in which he also wrote and directed the episode “The Witness”. Both episodes are visual masterpieces.

Farzar : Will release on July 15th.

Best known for Brickleberry and their Netflix series Paradise P.D., Roger Black and Waco O’Guin are the two creatives behind Farzar. The project was first unveiled back in January 2021 and since then, things have gone quiet with an occasional tease from the creators on social media. Now, as part of Netflix Geeked Week 2022, this new new sci-fi and very adult animated comedy show will be released in the next few weeks.

Here’s the full synopsis: “Egotistical human warrior Renzo liberated the planet Farzar from the evil alien Bazarack, and then established a human settlement under a huge dome, becoming the Czar of Farzar. Years later, Farzar is under attack by the evil aliens once again and Renzo’s well-meaning and not-so-bright son Prince Fichael ventures out with his special crew “S.H.A.T.” (Special Hostile Assault Team!), made up of a human-solider-turned-cyborg (Scootie), clashing conjoined twins (Val and Mal), an unhinged scientist (Barry Barris), a highly incapable mutant (Billy) and a mischievous little alien known as a chaos-celot. (Zobo). As they begin their journey to fight the aliens that want to kill/eat them, Fichael quickly discovers that all is not what it seems and he may be living a lie.”

The cast of Fazar includes the voice talents of Kari Wahlgren who will tackle multiple roles including voicing Mal and Val, Dana Snyder will voice Fichael, Bazarack, and Billy in the series, Lance Reddick as Renzo, David Kaye as Barry Barris, Grey Griffin as Flammy, Jerry Minor as Scootie. Other voice actors include Carlos Alazraqui, Brian Hanby, and Luke McQuillan. Farzar will feature 10 episodes and is set to release July 15th, 2022.

Inside Job – Season 1, Part 2 : Release Date TBD.

Inside Job is an adult animated conspiracy theory comedy series from Gravity Falls writer Shion Takeuchi and creator Alex Hirsch. It takes place in a world where all conspiracy theories are true and follows Cognito Inc., a company that works for the secretive shadow government and helps to control the world from behind-the-scenes.

Reagen (voiced by Lizzy Kaplan) is a brilliant scientist who wants to rise in the ranks of Cognito Inc. Given her antisocial tendancies, Reagan teams up with generic, yet charming Brett Hand (Clark Duke) in order to pursue her career goals. Adding to her team is a sentient mushroom from inside Hollow Earth (Brett Gelman); a supersoldier, who is a dolphin-man hybrid after some horrific experiments (John DiMaggio); a drug-addicted drug manufacturer (Bobby Lee); and a public relations officer whose job is to fabricate fake news (Tisha Campbell). Throughout the first season, the team embarked on some eclectic adventures and eventually uncovered a mole on their team.

Inside Job – Season 1, Part 2 picks up shortly after the events of Season 1, Part 1 with Reagan Ridley (Lizzy Caplan) still struggling to come to terms with the fact that her father Rand (Christian Slater) is once again CEO of Cognito Inc. The trailer boasts the same blend of conspiracy-themed workplace humor that defined Inside Job‘s initial 10-episode run. Part 2 could possibly release this year but date is still TBD. Exception : Release Date TBD.

Exception is an upcoming Japanese Netflix Original animated horror sci-fi series created by Otsuichi, the award-winning novelist of Goth and ZOO. Characters in this series have been designed by the legendary Japanese artist Yoshitaka Amano; the man behind the beautiful art of the Final Fantasy franchise. Outside of his work on Japanese media, Amano collaborated with Neil Gaiman on Sandman: The Dream Hunters, earning a Bram Stoker award for his work.

The official synopsis: “In the distant future, humanity has been forced to leave Earth and migrate to another galaxy. A spacecraft is sent to a planet to terraform it and the crew is created one by one by a biological 3D printer. However, a fatal error occurs during the creation of one of the members. The crew then begins to encounter a series of unpredictable events.”

First look images for Exception have been revealed but there is currently no official date of release or known english dub cast announcements yet. The Japanese anime series could premiere later this year or sometime in 2023. Stay tuned for more updates.

Kong: Skull Island : Release Date TBD.

Netflix released the first sneak peak image from Kong: Skull Island, an upcoming animated series set in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. The mystical skull island serves as the residence for King Kong, and this new series promises to expand the mythology of the cinematic universe launched by Legendary with 2014’s Godzilla.

Skull Island first look image (see below) shows a beach where two tiny humans stand inside a colossal footprint left behind by none other, King Kong. All that is currently known is that the animated series will follow a group of shipwrecked people trying to survive on the island that is home to giant Kong and who knows what else.

Kong: Skull Island is being developed by Powerhouse Animation, the same studio behind Castlevania (Netflix) and the soon to be released series Masters of the Universe: Revolution. Subsequent films that fall within Legendary’s MonsterVerse include: Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and the latest Godzilla vs. Kong. A Godzilla vs. Kong sequel has been announced AND an untitled Apple TV live action series is busting it’s way out too. Stay tuned for release dates and more from Legendary’s MonsterVerse.

Moonrise : Release Date TBD.

Moonrise made its first announcement last year and has finally just released the first poster for fans to enjoy.  The anime is being handled by Wit Studio whose work includes Ranking of the Kings, Bubble, Attack On Titan and is teaming up with CloverWorks on Spy x Family. The series will take place in outer space and is expected to follow two men named Jack and All as they learn how to live life in the stars. At this time, little other information about Moonrise is available, but Wit Studio is working hard on the project behind the scenes.

Moonrise is an anime that will show audiences about the many difficulties that come with traveling through space. Best described with harsh atmospheres, extended periods of isolation, and of course, the possibility of encountering other living creatures while exploring. A release date for this sci-fi anime has yet to be announced but could make its way out on Netflix either late 2022 or early 2023. The Seven Deadly Sins – The Grudge of Edinburgh : Coming December 2022.

Seven Deadly Sins: The Grudge Of Edinburgh is the first of a two-part Anime film will arrive sometime in December 2022. Netflix teased the release back in April when a report coming out of AnimeJapan 2022, the largest anime convention in Japan, revealed a huge spike in Anime being watched around the world. The film is the latest installment in a long-running manga and anime franchise that features a setting similar to the European Middle Ages but involves a group of knights representing each of the seven deadly sins.

The story of The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburgh will follow Tristan, the son of The Seven Deadly Sins protagonists Meliodas and Elizabeth. Per Netflix, “Tristan inherits the power of the Goddess Clan and can heal people’s wounds and injuries, but he often ends up hurting others due to his inability to control his Demon Clan power. To protect his family, Tristan heads to Edinburgh Castle and meets a host of new friends along the way.”

Three cast members have been confirmed so far. Tristan is voiced by Japanese actress Mikako Komatsu, who is confirmed to reprise her role as the young Prince of Liones. Ayumu Murase will lend his voice talents of portraying the teenage version of Tristan. Yûki Kaji has been confirmed to be voicing the role of Meliodas. He’s best known for his voice roles on Attack on TitanJoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Accel World.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburgh is co-written by long-time Seven Deadly Sins scribes Nakaba Suzuki and Rintarou Ikeda. It’s directed by Bob Shirohata, who has steadily helmed many titles since 1988’s Transformers: The Headmasters. This two part film will be taken over by animation studios Alfred Imageworks and Marvy Jack. The first part of this film has a December 2022 release date. It’s specifically scheduled (which is subject to change) for December 20th, 2022. Part two is still TBD but stay tuned for more details.

Uncle From Another World – Premieres July 6th.

Uncle From Another World is a Japanese manga anime series by the AtelierPontdarc animation production company that’s written and illustrated by Hotondoshindeiru. Shigeki Kawai signed on as director with Kenta Ihara as a series composer and scriptwriter with Kazuhiro Oota as character designer.  This anime version will feature “Story” by Mayu Maeshima as the opening theme song, while the ending theme is “Ichibanboshi Sonority” by Yuka Iguchi.

Synopsis: “Seventeen years ago, Takafumi’s uncle fell into a coma, but now he’s back like a man risen from his grave. Soon, Takafumi discovers two bizarre things: His uncle treasures video games above all else, and, while comatose, he was actually transported to another world as some heroic guardian! Now, not only does Takafumi have to room with an uncle who is literally magical, he also has to catch the guy up on two decades of history—smartphones, high-speed internet, modern anime tropes…and the traumatic outcome of the ’90s console war”!

The first episode will get a preview screening June 25th on YouTube. Netflix will stream the series worldwide, starting with Japan in July. The company will reveal the streaming schedule outside Japan at a later date. Cast includes: Takehito Koyasu as Uncle, Jun Fukuyama as Takafumi, Mikako Komatsu as Fujimiya, Haruka Tomatsu as Elf, Aoi Yuki as Mabel, and Aki Toyosaki as Alicia. Uncle From Another World premieres July 6th.

Junji Ito Maniac : Japanese Tales of the Macabre : Will release sometime in 2023.

Netflix has confirmed that its company is working on a new anime based on the stories of horror manga artist Junji Ito. Ito announced that the anime will premiere in 2023 and revealed some of the production designs for the series.

Juji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre will adapt 20 stories from Ito’s body of work that will be done for the first time, just for its Netflix release. This new anime adapts stories from the TomieSōichi, and The Hanging Balloons manga. It is not known yet which stories specifically from the Tomie and Sōichi manga, but details are slated to be revealed closer to the premiere date.

This isn’t the first time Junji Ito’s work has been adapted into anime. Ito’s 2001 supernatural horror manga Gyo was adapted by Ufotable into an animated film in 2012, while a previous animated anthology of Ito’s short stories, titled Junji Ito Collection, released in 2018. An anime adaptation of Uzumaki, Ito’s 1998 supernatural dark fantasy horror manga, is slated to air on Adult Swim October 2022.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners : Primieres September 2022.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an upcoming Netflix Original anime series and spin-off of the CD Projekt Red video game Cyberpunk 2077 that hails from studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, Promare). The series has been written by Yoshiki Usa and Masahiko Ôtsuka, both of whom worked on Star Wars: VisionsLittle Witch Academia, and SSSS.Dynazenon. The much anticipated anime will be dual directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren LagannPromare) and Hiromi Wakabayashi. Feature character designs are by Yoh Yoshinari (Little Witch AcademiaBNA: Brand New Animal).

Announced back in June 2020 and after two years the anime series has confirmed that it will be a separate story from that of Cyberpunk 2077. However, the story will take place in Night City. Silent Hill series composer Akira Yamaoka will compose the original score.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an animated series “that follows a street kid trying to survive in a tech and body mod-obsessed city of the future. With everything to lose, he chooses to become an edgerunner, a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk” per the synopsis release.

Fans of the original Cyberpunk 2077 game will surely be able to find favorite spots and NPCs throughout the series once it goes live. And given Trigger’s track record with anime, there is little doubt this futuristic show will be a treat for the eyes.
